Sometimes it’s easy to miss unbelievable opportunities that are close to home, even when the most beautiful camping destinations are right in our backyard – and Arizona is no exception! If you’re longing for a gorgeous winter camping destination, head to Grand Canyon National Park in your new or used RV. You’ll be glad you did!
About the Park
The Grand Canyon is a testament to the power of water and time! The winding Colorado River is responsible for cutting the Canyon over thousands of years.
Loaded with take-your-breath-away beauty, the Grand Canyon doesn’t disappoint. Visitors have several different ways to enjoy everything it has to offer. Hopi Point, Yavapai Point, and Mather Point all offer exceptional panoramic views. The NPS website stays updated with what’s accessible (and what’s not) at this time of year, so let that guide your plans!
Things to Do
Visitors at this time of year enjoy mule rides and hiking! (During warmer months, rafting trips on the river are also popular options, so plan to come back in the summer!) Phantom Ranch is a great option if you’re wanting a mule trip, allowing you to safely and easily enjoy a walk down into the canyon. There are also several hiking trails for all skill levels, including – take the family-friendly Rim Trail, or if you’re wanting something more advanced, hike down into the canyon.
Other popular trails include the South Kaibab and Bright Angel trails. If you want a truly exceptional view, head to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass-bottom walkway extending over the canyon.
Finally, if there’s ONE THING (well, two things) you do while at Grand Canyon National Park, it needs to be watching the sunset and sunrise. It’s free, it’s gorgeous, and it’s unforgettable – and way more beautiful than any photograph can show. Pick out a viewing spot for the sunrise the night before – watching the sunrise is pretty popular – and get there early so you can get set up comfortably. Dress in layers and bring either your camp chairs or extra blankets to sit or bundle up with. And don’t forget a thermos of coffee or hot cocoa!
