Taking your fur baby on a camping trip can be fun, enjoyable, and rewarding for both of you! Here are some RV tips for camping with dogs.
Check Campground Pet Policies – and Go Somewhere Dog-Friendly!
It’s important to get things off to a good start. Make sure to do your due diligence by making reservations at a campground that’s pet friendly. Check their policies online ahead of time and abide by any restrictions or rules they have. This may be as easy as following leash rules or “quiet hours” (no barking after 10 pm), but there may be restrictions on allowed breeds or even how many dogs you’re allowed to have with you. A good campground will also require your pet to be up to date on all vet appoints and vaccinations – for the safety of everyone involved.
Speaking of the vet, schedule a visit before you go, especially if you’re overdue. Get all your dog’s shots up to date, and consider getting your pet microchipped at this time, too, if they aren’t already.
Gear to Pack
Make sure your dog has a well-fitting collar and ID tags, and don’t forget other essentials, like the following:
- Leash
- Any medication your dog takes
- A pet first aid kit (ask your vet for recommendations on what to include)
- Pet waste disposal bags
- Their favorite toys or blankets!
- Food, water, and treats
Some of those things are common sense, like the leash and waste disposal bags…but if you’re going on vacation to have fun, it needs to be fun for everyone in the family…including your fur baby. That means packing along their favorite toys that bring them comfort or calm anxiety. And if it’s a long driving day, make sure to build in a few extra stops – not just to stretch your legs, but to let your doggo stretch theirs, get out and run and play, and burn off some energy.
Travel in a Pet-Friendly RV
We have several new and used RVs for sale that are specifically pet-friendly! You’ll find features like D-ring leash hookups or even stowable food and water stations. Just ask us for a recommendation! If you have a smaller breed of dog with shorter legs, consider getting a foldable dog ramp to help them enter and exit the RV safely. If it’s a folding and portable ramp, it should easily be able to stow in your RV’s exterior storage compartment.
Also, maintain comfortable interior temperatures in your RV. An RV is like a cabin on wheels, and extreme weather can make your dog feel uncomfortable or anxious. Make sure the heating and cooling systems are in good condition any time you set out for a road trip. Everyone will be more comfortable!
Watch for Wildlife
Wildlife viewing can be an unforgettable experience for any of us, but please be mindful of both the wildlife and your dog. Many wildlife animals may see your dog as a threat, and the encounter can quickly and easily turn dangerous. Always keep your dog on a leash, and make sure they’re well trained to obey basic commands.
Every dog is unique and one of a kind – so of course you’ll want to modify these RV tips for camping with dogs to your personal needs (and the needs of your dog). If you can prioritize their well-being and safety, and be mindful of their needs, then camping with your dog can be a wonderful and rewarding experience for years to come.
